Rising Costs Families Are Paying For Healthcare In Australia

In this guest post, The Journal of the Consumers Health Forum of Australia’s Health Voices, looks at the rising costs patients and their families are paying for healthcare.

CHF CEO, Carol Bennett, says ‘The growing gap between Medicare schedule fees and what health providers charge consumers is creating a two tier system in Australia – those that can afford to pay and access healthcare, and those that cannot.’

Health Voices includes articles from the Minister for Health, the Hon Tanya Plibersek MP; Shadow Minister for Health, the Hon Peter Dutton MP; Greens Senator Richard di Natale and a range of experts and consumers.

It is clear that out of pocket costs are having a big impact on patients and their families. Just a sampling of stories sees patients breaking into their superannuation, missing doctor appointments or not taking medicine that could help – all because of cost.

CHF also produced a short video – called Hip Pocket Pain – that talks to the key issues around rising out of pocket costs.

Featured on OurHealth are the video stories of breast cancer survivor, Leonie Havnen and Robert Pask who lives with MS and other chronic conditions. They shared their stories to help drive change that will improve healthcare for all Australians. You can too.
